Umbrella sailing

From KayakWiki

Umbrellas are a good choice for the opportunistic sailor. They are easy to stash under the deck bungies and can be deployed quickly to catch the wind. They run with the wind well and are marginal at an angle to the wind.

The best are golf umbrellas - especially the Gustbuster brand and similar. They have the following advantages:

  • Made of fiberglass and plastic with no metal to corrode
  • Have vented canopies to shed excess wind and minimize the problem of turning inside out in a gust.
  • Bigger than regular rain umbrellas but small enough to handle.

Umbrella sailing basically means holding the umbrella in front of you while you drift with the wind. Some paddlers will hook the umbrella handle under deck bungies in a light wind.

If you are really serious about kayak sailing, look into fixed rig sailing.
