[edit] New domain!

Oh wow. kayakwiki.org! Excellent! I've been thinking this is what we need

You're doing great work with all of this by the way Mike. Sorry I've not been around much to help, but I'll get stuck into editing again at some point -- Harry Wood 05:24, 31 May 2006 (EDT)

I wanted a new domain:

  • partly to reduce the length of the URL
  • partly to uncouple the wiki from my personal website
  • mostly because I thought it needed a cool, unique-to-itself domain name.

I wish I'd done this a couple of weeks ago - Google's been scanning the heck out of KayakWiki via the greatlakeskayaker URL. It'll probably take another month or so for kayakwiki.org to show on Google as the source, if my understanding of Google's scanning policies is right.

[edit] Links from the old kayakwiki

Speaking of google indexing, I think there's probably quite a few links around the web pointing to pages of the old kayakwiki. If we could direct real users and also search engine bots to the right place here, I think that could be a good boost.

Incoming links which point to the homepage of the old kayakwiki are OK. Real users and search engine bots will quickly navigate their way to the correct homepage here, but what about any incoming links pointing to other pages.

D'you still have editing access to the old kayakwiki? We should figure out some way (maybe an automated script) to edit every page so that it links to the equivalent page on new the kayakwiki (in place of the content, or just a big heading link at the top).

It can be done with URL re-writing. I sent Nick a re-write script some time ago that will take an incoming URL to his web site and re-write it to send here. It also does neat things like change the format of the page names (e.g Title case changed to lower case and CamelCase to lower case). However, he hasn't implemented it yet.

Ah yeah. An apache rewrite will be better (diverts the pagerank better too) if Nick gets around to setting it up - Harry Wood 05:05, 20 October 2006 (EDT)

[edit] Multi-lingual!

Oh well done with the multi-language set up Mike! -- Harry Wood 12:30, 5 March 2007 (EST)

Oh right. We have a 'pool' area for sharing files between the language installations. Yes I suppose we'd need that. Bit of a pain isn't it? Well done for getting to all to work though.
On a different topic, I just noted some imagemap problems. See pool:Talk:Imagemap. I know you're working on it. Maybe that observation will help. -- Harry Wood 06:54, 7 March 2007 (EST)
