[edit] Map of Europe
OK I have a kayakwiki map of Europe ready. Check it out. Eastern Europe was a bit too fiddly to draw all the click areas, so I had to lump it all together.
I made this image by screengrabbing the Demis Map Server. Rendered images from this are public domain. See my question here (I was asking this a long time ago while I was involved in some discussions about map-making on wikitravel.org)
I think DEMIS could be the best way to get relief maps, showing where the interesting mountain ranges are. NASA images show them too, but I think they just look a bit murky, and they don't have country borders. For the more zoomed in sea kayaking maps, it's maybe better to use satellite photos. What do you think?
As for the more zoomed in river maps, that could be more tricky (finding good free maps). I'm involved in the openstreetmap.org mapping project which eventually might map out rivers. Something to figure out in the future anyway.
So I was going to upload this Europe map image, but it's over the file size limit. Can't really scale it down now. That will screw up all the coordinates. I could reduce jpeg quality, but I think the country labels will start getting very fuzzy and difficult to read. -- Harry Wood 18:41, 24 July 2006 (EDT)
- I copied the map and reduced the jpeg quality a bit and is looks ok to me at 49KB. It's uploaded - take a look and see if it's ok to you.
- I don't see a problem with lumping areas and using ever more refined maps where required. Michael Daly 11:45, 30 July 2006 (EDT)
