St. John Ambulance Official Wilderness First Aid Guide
Wayne Merry
McClelland & Stewart Inc, 1994
ISBN 0-7710-8250-9
This book was written not for the wilderness enthusiast but for people who live and work in the wilderness - notably First Nations individuals in Alaska and Canada's north. As such, it contains very complete information on everything up to and including childbirth! Remedies and aids will contain suggestions that assume familiarity with life in the wild. That does not detract from its value as a guide for those of us for whom the wilderness is a travel destination.
Wayne Merry is a former US Navy Hospital Corpsman who served during the Korean War. He was also an active outdoorsman and made the first ascent of El Capitan. His writing style results in an easy to understand book with a wealth of useful information.
He covers almost every topic you are likely to want. It is weak on tropical diseases and situations, so if you're kayaking into the Amazon, you might want another book. However, for most other situations, this book covers first aid well.
If there is a single first aid book that I'd take with me on travels through the boreal forest regions I paddle, it is this one.
