North East England has many rivers flowing from the Pennines mainly eastward to the North Sea. The sources tend to be at 2000-2500' on moorland, where the streams are small and rise and fall quickly. These coalesce and form steep spate streams, often only paddleable after heavy rain and while it is still falling. As the rivers become more accessible, many become less steep and more amenable to intermediate paddlers and more often in condition. However, throughout the region are landforms dictated by the hard rock formation known as the Great Whin Sill, and where rivers cross this are often steep falls and rapids in bigger volume rivers.
The North east coast of England has a lot of worthwhile sea paddling, but also some major ports on the Tees and Tyne where shipping traffic is heavy and waters can be quite polluted. A useful reference for the north of this area is
