KayakWiki:Searching

From KayakWiki

[edit] You can search KayakWiki for information on kayaking and related info.

The Search box is found on the left side of every page. There are two buttons beneath the text input area.

  • Go
    • Clicking on the Go button will search through page titles for a match. If a match is found, the page is displayed. If not, the result is equivalent to clicking Search.
  • Search
    • Clicking on the Search button will search through both page titles and page content for a match. The search results page will show two sections. The top section will show pages with matches in the titles. The lower section will show all pages with matches to the text within the content. Content matches will be shown in context - a brief piece of text on either side of the matching text will be displayed.

Word search is not case sensitive. "Kayak", "kayak", and "KAYAK" will all return the same results. You cannot use wildcards (* ?) in searches nor can you use regular expressions. Only words can be searched.

Words with fewer than 3 letters are not searched.

[edit] Adding kayakWiki to your Browser's search capability

If you are using Firefox or Internet Explorer, you likely have a search field in the upper right hand on the Toolbar. Since KayakWiki supports OpenSearch, you can add KayakWiki to the list of web sites you can search from this field.

Open a KayakWiki page (like the main page) and then:

  • Firefox
    • Click on the drop-down arrow to the left of the search text entry field on Firefox's toolbar.
    • Select "Add Kayakwiki (English)"
  • Internet Explorer
    • Click on the drop-down arrow to the right of the Live Search text entry field on IE's toolbar
    • Highlight "Add Search Providers"
    • Select "KayakWiki (English)"

You can now search KayakWIki without first having to open a KayakWiki page. Simply select KayakWiki in the search field on the toolbar and enter the term you wish to search for. KayakWiki's search result page will be opened with the result of your query.
