Deck
From KayakWiki
One of the defining features of a kayak is that it is decked over and is not just an open hull (as with canoes). This means that except for the cockpit the entire boat is enclosed and sealed. This makes kayaks more suitable for whitewater and rough sea, since they do not take on water in large waves or when capsized. It also means kayaks can be rolled without taking on water.
In general terms, the deck is the whole area of flat material which seals off the top of the kayak. However the word 'deck' is sometimes used as a lazy abbreviation of 'spray deck' (removable soft part sealing the cockpit around the kayaker's body).
In both wooden and plastic kayaks, the top of the boat may be outfitted with various features. These include handles, and grab loops, deck lines and hatches.
| Foredeck | The part of the deck forward of the cockpit. |
| Aft deck | Also rear deck or quarterdeck. The portion of the deck aft of the cockpit. |
